North London Hospice is a registered charity providing specialist palliative and end-of-life care to people with life-limiting and terminal illnesses across the London boroughs of Barnet, Enfield and Haringey, with some services now extending to Camden and Islington. Founded in 1984 by local GP Dr Chris Hindley and nursing director Harriet Copperman OBE, it was established in response to the closure of St. Columba’s Hospital, which had left North London without a long-stay aftercare facility, and it became the UK’s first multi-faith hospice, welcoming people of all faiths and none. Care is delivered by a multi-professional team of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, social workers, counsellors and chaplains, with most patients supported at home and further care provided at its purpose-built inpatient unit in Woodside Avenue, Finchley (opened in 1992) and its Health & Wellbeing Centre in Winchmore Hill. Now supporting over 3,500 people each year, North London Hospice provides its services free of charge, relying on donations, legacies and fundraising alongside partial government funding to sustain its work.
